The Forest Hill Cemetery Preservation Foundation will officially launch the restoration of Childs Chapel with a public ceremony, press conference, and ceremonial stone laying on Tuesday, September 29, at 10:30 a.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery.

 The event, titled A Gift Renewed: The Beginning of the Childs Chapel Restoration, will celebrate the start of a major preservation effort to protect and restore the historic chapel, which has served the community for more than 150 years.

 Built in 1869 through the generosity of Roxana Childs in memory of her husband, Silas D. Childs, the Gothic Revival chapel was donated for the benefit of the public. A marble tablet at its entrance bears the words “free and common use forever,” reflecting the vision that has guided the chapel since its creation. 

Today, that vision remains as relevant as ever. 

Phase One of the restoration project will focus on critical preservation work, including masonry stabilization, restoration of historic ventilation systems, and measures designed to protect the structure from further deterioration. The project represents the first step in a broader effort to preserve Childs Chapel for future generations. 

“Childs Chapel was given to this community as a gift,” said Frank Williams, President of the Forest Hill Cemetery Preservation Foundation. “For more than 150 years, it has provided a place of comfort, remembrance, and dignity for countless families. This restoration ensures that future generations will continue to benefit from that gift.” 

The ceremony will feature remarks from community leaders, preservation partners, and project representatives, followed by a ceremonial stone laying to commemorate the beginning of restoration efforts. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view historic photographs, learn more about the project, and participate in guided tours of the chapel.

 The restoration effort reflects years of planning, fundraising, and collaboration among community members, preservation advocates, donors, and partner organizations. 

“The restoration of Childs Chapel is possible because people throughout our community believe these places matter,” Williams said. “Historic preservation is ultimately about stewardship. Each generation inherits these landmarks, and each generation has a responsibility to care for them.”
