Ribbon Cutting: Sleep in Heavenly Peace

The Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Utica chapter is celebrating five years of ensuring "No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town" and invites the community to celebrate the milestone. The Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce will host a public ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at the SHP Utica shop, 55 Oriskany Blvd., Yorkville, behind Meyda Tiffany.

 The celebration continues with an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, featuring tours, food trucks, SHP swag and more. Everyone is welcome, including volunteers, community supporters and those interested in learning more about SHP Utica. Since launching in August 2021, the volunteer-driven SHP Utica chapter — part of a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing beds to children in need — has delivered more than 3,000 handmade beds throughout Oneida and Herkimer counties. Each child receives a new bed, mattress, pillow and bedding at no cost to their family.

 Founded on the belief that every child deserves a safe and comfortable place to sleep, the chapter has grown into one of the region's most active volunteer organizations. Thousands of volunteers, businesses, civic groups, churches and community partners have donated their time, talents and resources to build and deliver beds over the past five years. 

"When we started in August 2021, we were working out of a back room at Sangertown Square," said Steve Sperbeck, who founded the SHP Utica chapter and served as its first president. "To see the passion and support from our volunteers and the community over the past five years has been amazing. Knowing that more than 3,000 children who once didn't have a bed now have one is an incredible accomplishment, and everyone who has supported this mission should be proud."

 Current chapter President Bill Gagnon said the milestone reflects the dedication of volunteers and supporters, as well as the vision that launched the chapter. "I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together over the past five years serving our community. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of SHP Utica volunteers, more than 3,000 children now have beds to call their own. Every bed represents comfort, dignity and a better night's sleep for a child who needed it. "We also owe a special thank you to Steve Sperbeck for recognizing the need in our community and having the vision to start the Utica chapter. His leadership laid the foundation for everything we've accomplished together. "Thank you to everyone who has given their time, talent and heart to make this milestone possible. Together, we're making a lasting difference — one bed at a time."

 Although the chapter is celebrating its first five years, the need continues. SHP Utica regularly receives requests from families throughout Oneida and Herkimer counties and welcomes volunteers, donations and community partnerships to help meet the ongoing demand.
